In the 1% Project Cultural Probes where used to explore the design space around people with schizophrenic symptoms in order to gain a better understanding of the ways in which they experience the world.  The project derived it’s name from the discovery that at least one in every hundred people experiences schizophrenic episodes during his or her life.

Cultural Probes allow the researcher to gain a deeper understanding of the user experience by exploring ways in which people ‘“explore, wonder, love, worship, and waste time” together and in other ways engage in activities that are “meaningful and valuable” to them’ (Gaver 2001).

The project amounted in several designed objects which intended to battle the stigmatization that surrounds schizophrenia.
