Urbanplanen, an area in Copenhagen, had been identified as a problem district by the municipality. For two months we worked on location in the area and conducted a series of observations and interviews which led us to discover that not the people, but the facilities in the area proved to be the problem. What we discovered was that in the urbanized landscape of their neighbourhood local kids (between the ages of 6 and 18) had no designated space were they could play or express themselves which reportedly leading to grafitti and burglaries. The area did not cater to their needs, which included self expression through music, dance and street arts.
With these new insights we developed a prototype: an outdoor music installation which could be operated by several kids at the same time to record and remix sound samples and create experimental music. The children could make music collaboratively by each moving a glowing orb on a vertical bar. By pressing a button on the orb they could record a sound into it which would be played back in a loop. The pitch and speed of the looping sound sample could be increased or decreased by moving the orb higher or lower on the vertical bar.
This project was made in collaboration with Sveta Suvorina and Alex Cotoranu.
